What’s an ALT?

ALT stands for Assistant Language Teacher. While homeroom teachers are often occupied with a wide range of responsibilities, ALTs can leverage their unique positions and backgrounds to present interactive and multicultural experiences. For this reason, at AtoZ, we prefer to call ALTs Global Navigators as they are often a key element to guiding young learners to navigate their life paths in the global scene. WIP

Modern day teaching now involves inspiring through interaction. Teachers now guide students through a more blended and organic approach rather than isolated instruction of written grammar rules. Being a teacher in Japan now means contributing to this movement to prepare for an even more globalized future.

Advance Your Career in Education

At AtoZ, we believe that teaching is more than just a job—
it’s a pathway to professional and personal growth. Whether you’re just starting out or you’re an experienced educator, we offer a range of opportunities to expand your skills and advance your career in education or beyond. From tailored training programs and mentorship to leadership opportunities, we are committed to helping you reach your full potential.

It’s harder to relocate to a different country later on and I was afraid if I waited I would ultimately never come and have this amazing experience.

The students and parents worked to translate the dance instructions into English for me to better understand. This was outside of class and while they had no obligation to do so, that desire to communicate with others even when you don’t share a common native language is something I work hard to foster in my students. Seeing it come to life was a real joy.

What should you have done to prepare?

Having done a little more research on the regularity of buses I would’ve realized the importance of a car to my specific area. That being said, in both cases my neighbors have helped me immensely, giving me rides until I purchased a vehicle, and one even gave me a kotatsu to get me through the winter! Even so, there’s no such thing as too much preparation.

It was a no brainer to give it a try

I like language and I really like to communicate with people. Having studied pedagogy, English and Japanese at university, it was a no brainer to give it a try.

If you try your best to communicate as well in Japanese.

I had already visited Japan prior to starting at AtoZ, so had an idea on what to do to prepare, but for people who are thinking of working as an ALT and have yet to visit Japan, do some research on the area and to learn hiragana/katakana and some useful phrases and words. Unfortunately, not many in Japan have a proper grasp of English, but are very friendly and helpful, especially if you try your best to communicate as well in Japanese.

Being a proactive and collaborative team player is key to building a successful and rewarding career in education.

When I moved here, I found a team of passionate people striving to deliver both fun and meaningful classes to children. I made it a point to learn as much as I could from them. After a few years, I actively sought ways to give back and share what I had learned with other ALTs.

You are not alone!

Moving to a different country is rewarding but challenging. No matter how much you prepare, you will likely feel like you could have done something differently. My advice is to come here with two things:
an open mind and an open heart. These will help you navigate your new environment and respond to the challenges you’ll face along the way. I also recommend connecting with your AtoZ peers and getting involved with the local community.

Difference between ALT and Eikaiwa teacher?

Being immersed in the school environment gives more opportunities to learn the language, culture and can also be a way to get involved in the community that was not possible as an eikaiwa teacher.

Our Teacher Support

AtoZ worked with me to ensure that it was a placement where I was able to handle things and thrive as a teacher and an individual. Furthermore, they continue to make themselves as accessible and supportive as possible and check in periodically to help support their teachers.

Why Joining AtoZ Was the Right Choice?

I am thankful to be able to work with AtoZ because everyone is not only kind but also extremely competent in their jobs. Where I come from in America, if a company tells you in an interview that “we’re more of a family,” that can actually be a red flag. But, AtoZ did not tell me that they work as a family; they showed me that.

Learning Japanese language and culture

I will say that if you want to see genuine delight in the Japanese people, if you are eager to learn about their culture at all or learn Japanese, they will be so thrilled to teach you and help you. Even though my Japanese is still very poor, I have never once felt insulted by someone’s response to me not phrasing things perfectly. They have always been extremely patient and eager to try to understand what I am saying.
